Iniziamo subito chiedendoti quanto sia importante l’Inter nella tua vita e nella tua musica?
Io confesso subito che non sono un grandissimo tifoso di Calcio nel senso che non seguo tutte le partite e non conosco il nome di tutti quanti i calciatori della squadra, però sin da quando ero un bambino che andava alla scuola Calcio di Castiglione delle Siviere, l’inter ha sempre rappresentato il mio concetto di mondo ideale, a partire dal nome della squadra “Internazionale”. È da sempre quello che mi sento di essere, insieme agli amici con cui sono cresciuto nel quartiere 5 continenti, la mia famiglia, siamo tutti molto International.
Non a caso il tuo ultimo pezzo è dedicato alla nuova, possiamo chiamarla, bandiera della tua squadra, perché tra tutti hai scelto proprio lui?
Mi rivedo molto nella sua storia, ho letto alcune delle sue interviste e ho notato che il suo modo di essere attaccato alla famiglia, le difficoltà economiche che ha avuto crescendo, i pregiudizi che ha subito sul campo e fuori fanno in modo che io riveda nella sua storia non solo la mia, ma quella di milioni di afrodiscendenti che si battono per ottenere successo qui in Europa.
Mi ha incuriosito molto la scelta del beat, ci puoi spiegare com’è nata la traccia?
Il beat è di Yves the Male, un produttore Afroitaliano di origini Togolesi che è cresciuto a Milano…What can I say? Yves è semplicemente il migliore, vi confesso che le prime stesure della canzone avevano un beat più aggressivo, ma poi succede spesso che mentre io Yves lavoriamo il brano subisca un improvvisa rivoluzione. Di solito di primo acchito io rimango “mindfreakeato” e dico “Nooooo” cosa è successo al pezzo, ma poi dopo un paio di giorni puntualmente scrivo ad Yves per ringraziarlo per aver cambiato direzione e aver tirato fuori una figata.
È sempre bello quando musica e sport si incontrano, in USA è un must, da noi solo negli ultimi anni si vedono queste partnership, cosa dovrebbero fare queste due parti per venirsi incontro?
Ho da poco sentito che la squadra di calcio del Marsiglia ha aperto degli studi di registrazione ed in più addirittura hanno aperto un etichetta discografica per finanziare i progetti degli artisti emergenti dei quartieri svantaggiati della zona. Purtroppo per ora la connessione tra musica e sport nel nostro paese avviene solo tra Vip e Vip, in quelle campagne o eventi dove gli artisti famosi incontrano i calciatori. Spero che un giorno anche in Italia le squadre di calcio faranno azioni utili per migliorare la propria comunità.
Sei sempre stato un artista che si tiene molto impegnato, se non fai musica, conduci programmi su TRX, se non fai quello magari stai recitando, cosa manca nel curriculum artistico di Tommy Kuti?
In effetti mi sento davvero molto fortunato, perché inizialmente dicevo “Se mi va male con la musica faccio questo o quell’altro” però ora faccio così tante cose che a volte ho delle crisi d’identità. Però confesso che per come sono fatto è la sensazione migliore del mondo quella di non essere imprigionato in una sola professione. Comunque c’è una mia grande passione / talento che non ho ancora condiviso col mondo e ho sempre pensato che quello potesse essere il mio secondo sbocco oltre alla musica….Rullo di tamburi, 3,2,1…

Per chi non ha la sbatta di leggersi quelle pagine…Sono nato in Nigeria e cresciuto tra Brescia e Castiglione Delle Stiviere, le mie prime influenze furono il rap Americano di artisti come 50 Cent, Eminem, Jay-Z. Poi crescendo e soprattuto viaggiando mi sono appassionato al rap francese di artisti come Youssoupha, Bomba, Maitre Gims. La musica Nigeriana Afrobeats è sempre stata lì in sottofondo, nelle feste dei miei compaesani, in chiesa quando ero bambino, nella macchina di mio papà attraverso i dischi di Fila Kuti. Ho deciso di cominciare a fare musica dopo il mio primo viaggio a Londra, quando ero andato a trovare mio cugino, in quel contesto multiculturale ho deciso che il rap sarebbe stato il mio nuovo linguaggio.
Come artista e come persona sei sempre stato molto vicino a tematiche sociali che ti stanno a cuore, vorrei discutere sul quanto è importante essere attivi su quel lato per un artista, sul discuterne apertamente e tutto ciò che ne deriva
Io mi ritengo un privilegiato, nonostante le umili origini dei miei genitori, ho avuto la possibilità di studiare, viaggiare all’estero e realizzare tutti quanti i miei sogni. Per questa ragione sento il dovere di utilizzare la mia piattaforma per raccontare le storie della “mia gente”. Crescendo in Italia c’era (e c’è ancora) un problema di rappresentazione per quanto riguarda noi afrodiscendenti, nel senso che per anni si è parlato solo di immigrazione citando sbarchi clandestini e criminalità, è compito mio di artista quello di approfondire e raccontare nuove storie inedite.
Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?
Troppa roba, ma per come va la mia vita, quasi sicuramente tra sei mesi starò facendo qualcosa di nuovo di cui in questo momento non neanche la minima idea. Sicuramente uscirà nuova musica.
